The Greek philosopher Plato thought the square is perfectly beautiful in its regularity. This geometrical form plays a special role in many religions and cultures. Temples, altars, monasteries and cities have all been built to square plans and alongside the circle, the square provides the basis for many meditative images such as Yantras used in Hinduism and Tantrism.
